The Jayne Lodge Foundation
Back in March of 2021, local news reported the sad passing of a much-loved teacher at Settle College, Jayne Lodge. From 2002 Jayne took a position as teaching assistant at Settle College. Jayne later decided to go into teaching and following a degree course, became a catering teacher at the college. Jayne also took on the role as Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) before becoming an assistant head teacher.
"Jayne was the epitome of what we want students to become at Settle College" said Gareth Whitaker the headteacher. Both having begun their work in education in Settle at the same time, they grew as colleagues, to eventually both being part of the same leadership team. Gareth Whitaker said, "her resilience shone through, rather like the artwork created in her memory".
Julie Sobczak, a former colleague at the College, created the artwork to celebrate Jayne's life in education and frame the foundation set up in her name. The sense is to support and award those students through school that have faced adversity, working hard to be the best they can be regardless of what stands in their way.
As well as the family being honoured to unveil the award at the Junior Prize Giving Event this month at school, with two recipients receiving the award in Years 9 and 10, Christian Lodge also wanted to say how immensely grateful his family were for all the contributions and support from the local community to the Just Giving fund set up in Jayne’s memory. The ambition is now to ensure the foundation, through recognising the resilience and perseverance of young people is awarded through this lasting legacy of Jayne’s.
