Careers Update
Autumn Term 23
Welcome to the termly careers update from Settle College.
We have again welcomed a range of external speakers to encourage students to consider a wide range of career options.
Sept 23 - Northumbria University – advice for 6th form students – Yr.12
13 Sept – Fire Service Careers talk – All students.
27th Sept – Paramedic Careers talk – All students.
3rd Oct – Craven College discussed post 16 options with Yr.11
16th Oct – re-start a heart training for all Yr.10 students/Yr11 students who missed last year.
8th Nov – BAE Systems – Careers talk for Yr.10-13 (700 apprenticeships are available from Sep 2024 in a wide range of areas).
15th Nov – Lancaster and Morecambe College to discuss post 16/post 18 options with Yr.11-13.
29th Nov – Army Careers Talk – All students
Nov 23 -Lancaster University Visit – Yr.13
13th Dec – BAE Systems – Yr10/11 assembly to discuss apprenticeship vacancies.
15th Dec – Yr9/10 Assembly with AWAZE group to discuss careers. (Europe’s leading vacation and holiday resort business).
20th Dec – Search and Rescue talk. Training of search and rescue dogs.
Wednesday lunchtime drop-in with Mrs. Walker. Open to all Yr. groups but can be particularly useful for students needing help applying to college.
All careers/virtual work experience/apprenticeship opportunities are forwarded to students/parents/carers throughout the year.
We have again secured the support of an independent level 6 careers advisor- Pete Soroczan.
Pete offers a 45 minute appointment to support Yr.11 & Yr.13 students in making career choices.
Careers Noticeboard – updated with open events at local colleges/apprenticeship opportunities/speakers.
The careers linked to subjects board in the library is a great place to look for ideas if students are uncertain where to start.
PHSCE Lessons – 6 week block of careers for each year group throughout the year.
Curriculum careers displays and lesson content – departments are encouraging students to consider careers linked to their individual subjects. These include careers following a variety of pathways including A level, BTEC/CTEC, T Level, Apprenticeships and Degree entry.

Work Placement Launch
Our work placement provider, North Yorkshire Business Enterprise Partnership (NYBEP) have transferred their work placement (WEX) system on-line. They will be delivering training to myself and Mrs. Nash (who will be supporting me to deliver this year's programme).
Yr.10 students work placement week will take place between 24th – 28th June 2024
Yr.12 students work placement week will take place between the 15th – 19th July 2024.
Mrs. Nash and I have launched the programme for students and all should have received their log in details from NYBEP. Parents should also have received instructions and consent for school to share a parental/carer e-mail with NYBEP.
Paper Copies of the work placement consent form are available from Mrs. Nash in the library for any student/parent/carer who does not wish to use the on-line system.
Coming up in the spring/summer term
Apprenticeships Week w/c 5th February 2024
Assemblies for all Yr. Groups from Mrs. Walker and an apprenticeships morning delivered by Craven College on 9th February 2024. This will be for all year groups and include guest speakers who are at various stages of their apprenticeship.
Careers Week w/c 4th March 2024
Assemblies for all Yr. Groups from Mrs. Walker and a careers morning delivered by Lancaster and Morecambe college on 8th March 2024. This will be for all year groups and include topics such as breaking down barriers to careers, stereotypes, post 16 and post 18 options.
University Careers Fair – 6th form students (Leeds or Manchester University)
Visit to RAF Leeming – 10th April 2024
Apprenticeships Fair – Craven College date tbc.
